Manali, according to legend,
was born when the waters of the Great Deluge receded and the
seventh Manu’s ark came to rest on a hillside in this valley.
As the earth dried up there appeared a place of breathtaking
beauty which was named after the great sage. Over the last
decade Manali has grown from an outback Himachali town to
a busy tourist destination bustling with as many as 400 hotels.
Surrounded by towering peaks at arms length, Manali’s major
asset is its proximity to the snowline, never more than a
few hours drive from comfortable 2050 metres. It is the centre
of a flourishing orchard industry, a popular honeymoon destination
and the base for numerous treks.
Getting There
| By Air: Access to Manali
and its various tourist centres is from Bhuntar airport,
49 km from town. Taxis and buses are available for transfers
to various centres in the valley. Rs.765 is charged one-way
by a Maruti Gypsy. |
| By Rail: Nearest railway
stations are at Chandigarh (280 km) and Jogindernagar
(190 km). |
| By Road: Kullu Valley
is connected by an extensive network of buses with the
northern region. A/c and non-a/c deluxe coaches are run
by HRTC, HPTDC, other road transport corporations and
private bus companies for Kullu and Manali. |
