The easternmost hill district of Uttranchal, Pithoragarh is often referred to as Miniature Kashmir. Nestling in a small valley – 5 km long and 2 km wide, the place is a treasure trave of attractions for tourists, mountaineers, mountaineers, iconologists and the religious. Pithoragarh has many temples and ruined forts to testify to its erstwhile position as a testify to its erstwhile position as stronghold of the Chand rulers. Bordering Tibet in the north and Nepal in the east, certain strategic locations in these areas require permits to explore. The pilgrim route to Kailash-Mansarovar traverses through this region. The headquarters of the district is located in the hill fort of Pithoragarh at a distance of 7 km from the main town. From the chandak hill located at around 2000 mts, one gets a panoramic view of the snow ranges extending from Trishul to Nandu Devi, the Panchchuli group and Mount Appi in Nepal. The Rai Gufa provides an excellent example of queer limestone deposits.

Getting there
By Air: Pighoragarh has an airstrip but no regular flights operate here.
By Rail: The nearest railway station is Tanakpur, 151 km.
By Road : The most convenient way to reach Almora is by road. Regular bus services connect it to Nainital – 67 km, Kathgodam – 90 km, Pithoragarh – 122 km, Delhi – 381 km, and many other places.

Dharchula,
102 km, is an important camp on the Kailash-Mansarovar, Chhota Kailash and Narayan Ashram routes.

Jauljibi, 73 km, at the confluence of Gauri and Kali rivers, is famous for trade fair in autumn.

Chhipla Kedar, 149 km, at an altitude of 4286 m, is a trekker’s paradise.

Askot, 54 km, an ancient kingdom with remains of a fort. Swami Narayan Ashram and Malika Arjun temple are housed here.

Didihat, 55 km, is a beautiful valley with nice views of Panchchuli peaks.

Patal Bhuwaneshwar, 14 km, has highly revered cave temples.

Gangolihat, 78 km, a cultural centre with Mahakali shaktipeeth.

Munsyari, 127 km, gateway of Johar region and base for treks to Milam, Namik and Ralam glaciers.

Chaukori, 112 km, famous for fabulous views of the Himalayas.

Berinag, 102 km, is situated amidst lush tea gardens.

Narayan Ashram, 129 km, a hermitage established by Narayan Swami in 1936. A spiritual centre.
